It was another big week in the SMJFL, with the launch of the Under 12 girls’ division on Saturday afternoon. 11 teams have entered the U12s this year and we look forward to another season played by all in great spirit.
- Two teams in Radiant Under 11 West didn’t have a win to their name before Round 7 – Dingley Black and St Peters – and yep, they squared off on Sunday! After a tight first quarter, it was Dingley who pulled away for a 33-point victory behind great games by Billy Thomas Peake and Phillip Hately-Fenton, who kicked two goals. In that same division, we also witnessed a battle of the Hamptons. Louis McAsey kicked all of Hampton 1’s four goals as they held off their derby rival Hampton 2 by 11 points...
- The Radiant Under 11 South ladder now resembles a dog’s breakfast after two draws on the weekend. Mordialloc-Braeside Red and East Sandringham North played out one of them, while Prahran Blue and East Brighton Vampires South tied on 1.1 (7) apiece. A good defensive press on both sides it seems...
- Cracking match in Under 12 West between Hampton and Prahran Black, with Hampton rallying from a big early deficit to win a close one by eight points. Thomas Willems, Jarrad Ellis and Matthew Jolly were the stars.
- No wonder East Malvern Gold is two games clear on top of Under 13 Division 1 – they held off a late East Sandringham charge to secure the points again. Ethan Phillips played a ripper. Credit to Mordi-Brae too, for chalking up their first win of the season against the more fancied Mt Waverley – kept their opponents scoreless after half time, too!
- They almost kicked themselves out of it with a Buddy Franklin-like 5.14 (44), but Mt Waverley stayed undefeated in Under 13 Division 3 after a six-point win over Waverley Park.
- Must mention the last quarter of Ormond Blue in Under 14 Division 2 – 8.1 (49) to Cheltenham’s two behinds! Talk about coming home with the breeze...
- Love the effort of Under 15 Division 2’s Beaumaris Sharks to stick with top-of-the-table St Bedes/Mentone Tigers for four quarters, going down by 16 in a tight battle. The Sharks can surely smell their first win for the year now.
- Can you believe the finish by Dingley in Under 16 Division 2?! There must have been a gale blowing to their end as they rolled right over the top of St Pauls/Bentleigh Demons with eight goals to one in the last term... Liam Considine was superb for the victors.
- It was derby weekend in Under 17 Division 1 and this one was much more competitive than Sunday’s West Coast-Fremantle AFL derby. The Red and Blue teams of St Bedes/Mentone Tigers faced off in a desperate encounter, with both sides occupying the two bottom spots on the ladder. Blue was up by just one point at half time, but found another attacking gear in the second half, drawing away to win by 26. Red shouldn’t fear though – they still showed a lot more flair than any Ross Lyon-coached squad...
