Round 15

League Women – Thursday - Uni Rebels v Lightning

The Uni Rebels shut down all challenges by the Lightning in their 64-48 win to keep pressure on the second placed Eagles as both sides vie for the ‘double-chance’ position in the upcoming playoffs. The Rebels closed down all efforts from the Lightning to pull off a late season upset and in the process have opened up the door for Ansett to claim the fourth spot in the playoffs from the Lightning. Rebel duo Edith Boundry and Ambah Kowcun teamed up for 29 points to lead the team to its 10 victory of the season with vet Chantelle Lee potting 9 in support. Lightning kept it close up until half time, trailing by only 5 at 30-25, but after the break the Rebels stepped up and delivered with a 34-23 run to finish things off. Bonnie Illingsworth led the Lightning with 15, with Yasmin De Curtins & Kelly Doherty hitting 10 each.

Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

The Tracy Village Jets ran the Eagles off their feet defeating the Birds easily 94-54 for their 23rd straight win. Undefeated so far this season with 18 straight wins the Bombers are closing in on a League record of 27 straight set by the Eagles back in 2008. This game, however, turned in favour of the Bombers in the second quarter when they put together a run of 24-14 to break the game open. The Jets led at half time 39-29 and after a third quarter run of 22-14 the writing was on the wall. Five Jets hit double figures with Tania Dhu leading the way with 19, Delsey Ah Wang 18 & Sam Rioli with 17. Michelle Friel top scored for the Birds with 22 and Trish Graham added 12.

Razzle v Ansett

After three losses to Ansett this season the Razzle finally got one back. They beat the Blues 47-34 to regain some respect for a woeful season. Erin Boyd and Caitlin Wortlehock led the Green & Gold to a memorable victory with a combined 27pts, most of them coming in the third quarter when they overtook the Blues to lead 33-27 with just a quarter to go. Boyd finished with 15 and Wortlehock 12, while Elizabeth Paice led the Blues with 16.

Ladder:                                                      Tracy Village Jets 18-0, Eagles 11-7, Uni Rebels 10-7-1, Ansett 6-12, Lightning 5-13, & Razzle 4-14

League Men – Thursday - Razzle v Tracey Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets were out to restore their pride in their match against the Razzle on Thursday night. The Green & Gold had upset the Bombers in their last contest, but this time around the Bombers did as their nickname suggests…bomb. They blew the Razzle off the court with a dominant 90-62 win that included 7 treys (21pts) and they did it without Michael MacLean and Travis Ellis their two main scorers. The depth of the Bombers bench was on display. Newest recruit Jesse Bell top scored with 28, Marcus Dyason & Jett Sukcharoen had 14 each and Jai O’Shaughnessy put up 10. William McClay hit a season high 22 for the Razzle with Rob Oliver & Nathan Radonich getting 10 apiece. Two pivotal games loom next week for the Bombers, one vs the Eagles and the last game of the season vs the Uni Rebels.

Uni Rebels v Lightning

The Uni Rebels slipped past the Lightning 72-69 in the closing minutes of what turned out to be a hard fought win for the League leaders. The Rebels had jumped Lightning 30-13 in the first quarter behind the accurate shooting of Tyler Jefferson and Jake Kirby, but the Lightning clawed a few points back to trail by 43-32 at half time. Not much separated the two sides in the third quarter, but the Lightning got on a roll in the last quarter to liven things up as they went on a 26-14 roll that fell just short, as did a desperate last second shot to tie it all up. Jefferson finished with 21, Kirby 10 and Lance Schmidt 15. For the unfortunate Lightning Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson led all scorers with 24, Cameron Bailey added 13 and Craig Martin 12.

Ansett v Eagles

A League high 47 points from Deola Folarin led the Eagles to a 102-57 thumping of Ansett. Folarin hit 26 points in the first half as the Birds flew off to a commanding 52-28 lead and did much the same in the second half. Matteo Rowse was the only Blues player to have any impact, finishing with a season and personal League best of 33 points. Jesse Williams-Hook added 22 for the Eagles.
