Message from Executive Officer

Hi All,
Firstly thank you to all of the volunteer scorers, coaches, assistant coaches, Managers, referees and general helpers who assisted with the staging of the 2018 Australian School Sport Championships last week.  It was a mammoth task to host the event with the two age groups and was an excellent test for our venue, staff and volunteers.  It was a wonderful event that was met with a lot of positives and everyone involved should be very proud.  It was the first time that Darwin has been able to enter  invitational teams in the event and was a great experience for these coaches and players who would not have been able to play, so I thank the Board for their support in entering these teams.  The younger NT schools teams showed they are competitive with their counterparts and had some impressive performances.  I hope this event leads on to DBA being recognised and able to host other events in the future.
There have been some questions regarding the changes in season timings, age groups etc so I have dedicated a whole section to this later in the newsletter.
Please also pay attention to the dates section in the newsletter as it ALWAYS has events and upcoming dates for future events.
Cheers
Kerri

Early October  - Spread the word and invite old players, coaches, referees and scorers to join us for a night of Basketball Celebrations with DBA 70th Anniversary celebrations.  More details to follow in the next few weeks.

Clarification New Seasons:
Season timing
Season 2018/19 commences on Monday 15th October 2018 with Grand Finals being held week of Monday 1st April 2019 (Sat Finals will be Sat 6th April 2019)
There will be a 6 week break from Monday the 17th Dec to Sunday 27th January as requested by the clubs.
Age Group cut offs
Players age changes occur in October rather than in January.
i.e. Whatever age change was going to happen in Jan, now happens in October prior – Ages are still based on YEAR of BIRTH not when birthday is.
Year of Birth Age Group 2018-19 Challenge Season
2009-2008 Under 12s
2007-2006 Under 14s
2005-2004 Under 16s
2003-2002 Under 18s
2001 Junior League Entry
1995 Junior League Maximum

  • The age groupings run January 1st through until December 31st of the year that the competition ends. For example, players that turn 18 before December 31st of 2019 will not be eligible to play in the 2018-19 Under 18s Season even though they will still be 17 when the season finishes in April.
Seasons
April - September: Junior & Senior Championship Season (League Challenge)
October – April: Junior & Senior Challenge Season (League Championship)
  • The League Championship season falls in line with the “Off Season” of other major second tier national comps such as QBL, SEABL, WABL. Waratah, Big V therefore allowing these players to compete in the DBA Championship season.
  • The change of age for all players would occur before the commencement of the October Season and would therefore fall in line with the start of the Junior Challenge season.

Did you know DBA, as a foundation member receives a dividend from the CAS Club?  Did you know this is dependent on our support?  In order to maximise our share it is important that we as DBA Members show our support and loyalty.  This year we received the least of the Foundation clubs, as we supported the least.  We need to improve this!  ALL DBA members receive FREE membership!  Every time you visit, buy a drink, have a meal or use the bottle shop - it is important that you swipe your card!  We have DBA Temporary Membership cards and Membership application forms at the office and courtside!  Please support the club that supports you!
